The Department of Commerce works for a fair and lasting economy. It runs the city’s currency and finances, and holds every business to fair practices.1

What the Department does for you

  • Runs the currency. The New Philadelphian Dollar comes as cash vouchers, which you exchange at the Bancc.2
  • Helps businesses. The Department provides resources and programs for business owners, and for anyone starting a business. See Business and commerce.3
  • Keeps business fair. Shops must be safe and well lit, with every price clearly marked.4
  • Pays the city’s suppliers. The city buys only from registered businesses and contractors. If it buys from you, file the signed requisition form (NP-DOC-1) with the Department for payment.5

If you’re penalized

The Department may fine or close a business that breaks these rules. You can appeal any penalty to a City court.6
