Become a citizen

How citizenship works, who can apply, and what happens after you apply.

New Philadelphia welcomes every like-minded person. Citizens can build and change things in the city, and vote once they have a Citizen ID and a residence here. The Department of Defense handles every step.

Applying

The Department reviews every application. If it declines yours, it will tell you why.1

What you get

  • Permissions. You can build and change things in the city the moment your application is accepted.2
  • A Citizen ID. It goes on every city form, and you need it to vote.3
  • A mailbox from New Philadelphia Express.4
  • The right to a jury trial for any crime you’re accused of in the city.5

Good to know

  • You can’t hold citizenship in New Philadelphia and another city at the same time.1
  • If you’re declined, you can appeal to the Interim City Council or a City judge.1
  • If you leave the city, tell the Department first. If you reapply within three months, you skip the background check.6
  • Citizens who haven’t been seen in the city for a full year may lose citizenship after the Department contacts them.7
