The Department of Defense protects the city from threats too great for any other department. It is also where every new citizen starts.1

What the Department does for you

  • Reviews your citizenship application, runs the background check, and grants your permissions once you’re accepted. If it declines you, it tells you why. See Become a citizen.2
  • Issues your Citizen ID, which goes on every city form and lets you vote.3
  • Keeps a record when you leave. Tell the Department before you go. If you reapply within three months, you skip the background check.4

Offices of the Department

Citizenship and Citizen ID

Handles the Application for Citizenship (form NP-DOD-1) and the Application for Citizen ID (form NP-DOD-2). Both steps are explained on Become a citizen.

New Philadelphia Civil Guard

The city’s military. The Department maintains the Guard and everything it owns, and the Interim City Council commands it.5

League of Cities

The Department supports the League of Cities and sends the city’s delegates to it. Every League member is a recognized trade partner of the city.6

Foreign relations and foreign courts

The Department is the city’s channel to other governments, and it represents the city in any foreign court. A government that wants an embassy in New Philadelphia signs an embassy agreement with the Department.7
