The Department of Criminal Investigations enforces the city’s criminal law, prosecutes offenders, and runs the city’s jail and penitentiary. It also holds the government itself to account.1

What the Department does for you

  • Keeps the criminal code, which the Supreme Court must approve.2
  • Takes complaints about officials. Report misconduct by any government official to the Internal Investigations Office.3
  • Issues explosives licenses after inspecting where you’ll store them. See Licenses.4
  • Approves private postal services.5

Offices of the Department

New Philadelphia Metropolitan Police Department (NPMPD)

The Department’s public face. Its officers enforce the city’s laws and protect its citizens, from precincts across the city.6

  • An officer making an arrest must meet you face to face and tell you the charges. If they skip a step, the arrest is unlawful.7
  • You can serve as an officer once you’ve been a citizen for a year, with no Class C or higher charge in that time and no open case against the city.8

Internal Investigations Office

Investigates any claim of misconduct by or toward a government official. Your complaint stays confidential between you and the investigating officer unless you agree otherwise.3

Attorney General

Prosecutes cases on behalf of the city, and may appoint up to five district attorneys. The Department also employs at least one public defender for cases in City court.9

New Philadelphia Penitentiary

The city’s main detention center. People awaiting trial are held in the New Philadelphia Jail.10

Prisoners may ask the parole board to shorten their sentence, except for Class A and Class B crimes.11
